Captain Walker Shaw has spent thirty years trusting his eyes over his instruments. The wound costs Shaw his command and leaves him ashore in New Orleans, a widower who has spent fourteen years using the sea to outrun the silence left by his wife’s death. Instead of retirement, he is given sixty days, an abandoned federal facility, and permission to build an interagency maritime unit from people the system has pushed aside.

Their investigation reveals La Corriente—the current—a trafficking network moving people and narcotics across the Caribbean and Gulf Coast, then inland through Louisiana’s commercial waterways. It survives not by corrupting the Coast Guard, but by studying its obligations and weaponizing the certainty that rescuers will always go toward people in the water.

The network’s local face belongs to one of New Orleans’s protected families, and the key to its access may be buried in the notebooks Shaw’s late wife left behind. To stop the machinery in front of him, Shaw must confront an enemy he cannot simply seize—and accept that command is not possession, victory is never complete, and vigilance was never meant to be carried alone.
