Nate Eckler holds a USCG Master’s license and has spent forty years navigating the coastal United States, from the Pacific Coast to the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic seaboard. He has worked as a licensed captain, delivery skipper, and marine surveyor, and commanded a youth training ship, the former USCG Cutter Morris. VIGILANT is his first novel.

Nate Eckler came to fiction after forty years of doing the work. He holds a USCG Master’s license and has navigated all three coasts of the United States — the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic seaboard — as a licensed captain, a delivery skipper moving other people’s vessels through weather they would not have chosen, and a marine surveyor paid to write down what a hull is actually worth.

He commanded a youth training ship, the former USCG Cutter Morris. It is a particular kind of command. You answer for the vessel, and you answer for a deck full of teenagers who have never stood a watch in their lives, and the sea is indifferent to how hard anyone is trying. Most of what he understands about how crews hold together, and how they come apart, he learned there.

He writes maritime fiction because the real version of this world is quieter, stranger, and more consequential than the version that usually reaches the page. In his books the procedure is accurate, the paperwork is accurate, and the weather is accurate. What happens in between is invented.

He lives on the Gulf Coast.

About the series
